Craig’s Story

A Conservative Fighter with a Record of Results for Rutherford County

Craig Harris’s life is a testament to resilience, faith, and hard work. Born in West Tennessee, Craig faced adversity from a young age. By 16, he was homeless, relying on the generosity of friends, coaches, and mentors to get by, sleeping on couches and working hard to build a better life. Through perseverance, he earned a Division I football scholarship to the University of Tennessee at Martin and later transferred to Bethel College in McKenzie, Tennessee. A multi-sport athlete, Craig graduated with a degree in business and moved to Middle Tennessee to start his family and career.

In the early 2000s, he founded Construction Concepts of Tennessee, a company that would grow into one of the state’s leading residential drywall companies. As a business owner, Craig has employed hundreds of workers and made the hard decisions that come with business leadership. His experience in the private sector has shaped his approach to public service, where accountability, efficiency, and results matter.

Beyond his professional success, Craig has always poured into the community. For years, he’s been a devoted football coach in Rutherford County, mentoring students at Oakland High School, Blackman High School, and most recently serving as Defensive Coordinator at Middle Tennessee Christian School.

Craig’s decision to enter public service was deeply personal. Like many families, Craig’s was affected by the opioid and drug epidemic in our country and community. He saw up close the devastation addiction was causing in his community.

In 2018, driven by a desire to make a difference, he ran for and won a seat on the Rutherford County Commission. Once elected, he immediately began working on real solutions to the opioid crisis. He led the effort to strategically join national lawsuits against opioid manufacturers, which resulted in major financial settlements. Craig then created and now chairs the Rutherford County Opioid Board, which manages the disbursement of those funds. Under his leadership, the county has launched a K–12 drug education program in partnership with the Director of Schools that has reached over 30,000 students. At the same time, the Opioid Board has awarded millions to local nonprofits focused on prevention, recovery, and education. As a result, drug deaths and suicides in Rutherford County have declined significantly.

Craig’s leadership extends well beyond a single issue. In just his second year on the Commission, he was elected Chairman of the Steering, Legislative, and Government Committee, a role in which he helped shape policy countywide. He has fought to keep property taxes low, supported policies that generated tens of millions in alternative revenues to property taxes, and played a key role in helping Rutherford County earn a AAA bond rating. Understanding the real costs of rapid growth, he has supported legislation that requires development, not taxpayers, to pay more for the services their projects demand. He believes in smart, strategic development that preserves the character of our communities while preparing for the future.

Public safety has remained one of Craig’s highest priorities. He has backed historic pay increases for law enforcement officers and first responders to ensure Rutherford County can recruit and retain the professionals needed to keep our communities safe. He has also stood strong for conservative values, supporting a resolution to declare Rutherford County a Second Amendment Sanctuary, a statement that local government will not comply with unconstitutional federal mandates infringing on citizens’ gun rights.

Now, Craig Harris is running for Rutherford County Mayor to bring that same commitment, accountability, and conservative vision to the county’s top leadership role. He believes the next mayor must be someone who understands the cost of growth, values public safety, defends personal freedoms, and brings a responsible, results-driven approach to government.

Craig lives in Murfreesboro with his wife Suzanne, a registered nurse, and three children, Reagan, Trey, and Seth. They attend New Vision Baptist Church. For Craig, public service isn’t about politics, it’s about protecting the values we share and securing a strong future for every family in our county.
